Fork Lift Truck Driver Medical

The HSE Safety and Working with Lift Trucks Guidance (HSG6), as part of the guidelines for forklift truck drivers, is that forklift truck drivers undertake medicals at prescribed intervals.  Good practice is to complete a forklift driver medical at the beginning of employment or at least commencement of driving and regularly thereafter (age dependent).  Caer Health Services undertakes medicals that are compliant with the statutory health surveillance requirements as set out by the HSE or more specifically the medicals are based around conforming to HSE guidance as laid down in HSE Document Safety and Working with Lift Trucks as stated above.

No-one should be permitted to operate the lift truck unless he or she has been selected, trained and authorised to do so.   Truck operators should be over the minimum school-leaving age i.e. minimum age 17 years, 18 in the construction industry, and over school-leaving age in agriculture. It is good practice for all operators and potential operators to be screened for fitness before employment and again at regular intervals in middle age.  Examination at age 40 and thereafter at 5 yearly intervals up to the age of 65 is recommended.  Operators over 65 should be screened annually.  Examination is also recommended in all cases after an accident or sickness absence of more than one month or after a shorter period if it appears that the illness may affect fitness to operate

As part of our health surveillance services, we at Caer Health Services can come to your site to complete forklift driver medicals and plant operator medicals. This service provision is very convenient and takes approximately 30 minutes per person.  These medicals also include a hearing test which could also be incorporated as part of your statutory health surveillance, if this is a requirement.

As well as forklift driving, we can undertake plant operator driving medicals.  As with health surveillance, our plant operator driver medicals are convenient, simple to undertake and cause minimal disruption if done at your premises, with the medical taking only 30 minutes.  On site, we only need the use of a convenient room near to the workforce and then Caer Health Services will simply work through your forklift drivers or plant operators in whatever order or timetable that suits production and your company needs.  As we conduct each driver medical, we would explain the results to the employee and give health advice as appropriate.  The Occupational Health Advisor will give an overview of the days medical outcomes to the Manager then a written report will be produced and issued within 5 working days.

Advice notes for medical standards for forklift truck operators are within the HSE Safety in Working with Life Trucks and the main medical areas during health screening cover general health, vision, hearing, cardiovascular, diabetes, nervous system and psychiatric disorders.
